The Cradle of Liberty

Founded in 1630, Boston “Bean Town” is one the oldest cities in the United States. It is home to many leading colleges and universities and the famous “Freedom Trail” for Boston’s history. The Boston Pops Orchestra and Boston Symphony and numerous theatres are here as well as the New England Aquarium, the USS Constitution, John F Kennedy Library and Museum as well as the Prudential Tower and the John Hancock Tower and Observatories.

Sample Itinerary:

Depart to airport for overnight non-stop flight to Boston.

Arrive in Boston and meet EDT Trip Leader:  You will be in good hands from the time you land in Boston until you say good bye to your licensed and certified EDT Trip Leader.  Your trip leader will handle all logistics while providing entertaining anecdotes and historical information along the way.

New Bedford Nat’l Historic Park: http://www.nps.gov/nebe/index.htm  New Bedford was the mid 19th century’s preeminent whaling port and for a time “the richest city in the world.” The cobblestone streets and restored buildings offer a unique chance to step back into time while exploring this picturesque New England town.

New Bedford Whaling Museum:
http://whalingmuseum.org/ The Museum is a forum for whale and fishing conservation, research and symposia. Its cultural outreach extends around the world, with close ties to Japan, Portugal and the Iñupiat people at the Arctic Circle.

USS Constitution “Old Ironsides”: http://www.history.navy.mil/ussconstitution/index.html The USS Constitution is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat. Experience what it was like for the sailors onboard.  The history of USS Constitution tells the story of the American experience and who we are as a nation.

Old North Church: “The British are coming!!” Located at 193 Salem Street, in the North End of Boston, is the location from which the famous "One if by land, and two if by sea" signal is said to have been sent.

The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile red-brick walking trail that leads you to 16 nationally significant historic sites, each one an authentic American treasure.

Salem Witch Museum: http://salemwitchmuseum.com 
By the summer of 1692, 180 people had been accused and imprisoned. They were defenseless against accusations of witchcraft in a society driven by superstition and fear. The Witch Museum brings you back to Salem in 1692. 

The House of Seven Gables:
Nathaniel Hawthorne's visits to his cousin's home are credited with inspiring the setting and title of his 1851 novel, “The House of the Seven Gables”. Outside, spectacular seaside gardens await you. Inside, you will discover a mysterious secret staircase where you least expect it!

Americas Oldest Candy Company. The company is rich in history and dates back to 1806, when an English woman Spencer by name, was shipwrecked and landed in Salem in a rather destitute condition.  Spencer produced "Salem Gibralter," said to be the first candy made and sold commercially in America.

Old South Meeting House “The tea is brewing”:

We will visit this beautiful National Historic Landmark to experience events that shaped the United States.

The tour is student-led and is comprised of an outdoor walk through of the Harvard Yard, providing a history of the university, general information, and a unique view on the student’s individual experience

Museum of African American History:

The African Meeting House and Abiel Smith School on Beacon Hill, both built in the early 1800's, are two of the Museum of African American History's most valuable assets. Located in what once was the heart of Boston's 19th-century African American community, these buildings remain a showcase of black community organization and enduring testimony to black craftsmanship.

Literary Tour of Concord including Orchard House: Many of America’s most influential literary figures of the 19th century lived near each other in Concord, Massachusetts. Many of them were friends in life, meeting together to discuss the popular philosophy of transcendentalism. Thoreau, Emerson, Hawthorne and Alcott are just a few that have left their mark for you to explore.  We will tour The Orchard House, which is most noted for being home to the talented Alcott family, and is where Louisa May Alcott wrote and set her beloved classic novel “Little Women”.
